cowhide style furniture

Cowhide Black Club Chair Lightweight Accent Durable Construction Padded Seat

Hello folks. Your modern world decor blogger here.

I was thinking about one of the products in my store and I decided to do research about the history of the style,  the upholstery, durability and things like  who uses this item.

I’m talking about cowhide furniture. Not the leather upholstery that you get in a plush couch, chair or automotive seats, but the multi textural, multi pattern of those beautiful creatures we call cows, steers, bulls and such. An animal that gives so much to what many may for granted. They give us food, dairy products, leather for furniture.  Used to make shelters and clothing back in the days of the old west and it still is used for the same things today. So versatile and in my case the actual hides make for fantastic, beautifully patterned rugs, chair coverings.  The list just goes on and on.

I lived down in south Texas for a time and I worked with a woman who’s business was antiques. She also had rental properties and some came furnished.  In this case we had a lot of the cowhide chairs that she had procured on her hunts for items in her store.  I’m telling you  that I fell in love with  these chairs. These were original and who knows how old. The hides were all one  piece even to the point that they were held on by strips of the upholstery that were cut from  the same piece. They would be tied under the chairs and I only can assume that the hides were put on wet and then stretched over the seat. Tied underneath and when dried it would tighten them up.  I can’t say how acuate that description is I’m only surmising what I think. One day I’d like to try it.

Nowadays manufacturers don’t have to work that hard as there are a lot of synthetic materials on the market that are very durable. But there are those that still work with the real thing. Definitely an art.                  See this review attached here.      https://prospectheightsyoga.com/cow-skin-upholstery-fabric/  by a Ms. Ashley Ann Jones.                                                                             She talks about the different fabrics used today and can give you a good reference point when making a decision about patterns and styles to fit your needs. Thank you Ms. Jones for your research.
